Proxmox LVM Expansion, adding additional disks to your Proxmox host for VM storage. No real story behind this post, just something simple and probably more of a documentation of the process for myself more than anything. #1. In Proxmox VE 4.2 we changed the LV data to a thin pool, to provide snapshots and native performance of the disk. The /var/lib/vz is now included in the LV root. . For example, one hard drive for the Proxmox installation, one hard drive for uploading operating system ISO images to, and one hard drive to create virtual machines on. We think this is a great set up for beginners with small servers because it distributes the load over many drives, reducing drive failure and improving performance. VMs don't care about the storage as a backup restore will create a new VM from scratch based on your backupped data. So backup and restore to a new storage should be fine. . If I already have existing encrypted LVM setup on a disk and I want to use the 'LVM' storage type in Proxmox GUI, is that possible? When I try to setup anything other .

hello people, I have been reading quite a bit how to add a new ssd to my homelab (proxmox) and how to add it as lvm-thin storage. I got to the following list of actions (assuming that nvme0n1 is the newly added SSD) format the disk sgdisk -N 1 /dev/nvme0n1 create a physical volume pvcreate. I have installed a new proxmox server and when i try to create a ZFS or LVM it says "No Disk Unused" in devices list. These information are shown in my disk details from Proxmox web gui Enabled: Yes Active: Yes Content : Disk image, ISO image, Container, Snippets, Container template Type: Directory Usage: 0.45% (2.07 GiB of 456.55 GiB)
PVE doesn't support striped disks via the GUI by default, you have to create them on the command line. For LVM you can use 'mdadm' to create a device /dev/mdX and then use and format that as LVM/LVM-thin via the GUI. [0] Alternatively, LVM supports striping itself, but that requires more effort to get working properly via our GUI. Introduction The operating system of our servers is always running on a RAID-1 (either hardware or software RAID) for redundancy reasons. Since Proxmox VE 7 does not offer out-of-the-box support for mdraid (there is .
I'm relatively new to Proxmox and iSCSI, and I'm seeking advice from those with experience in this area. Specifically, I have a few questions: . Export just one or a few big LUNs and use them as LVM physical volumes, create an LVM storage in Proxmox VE and let Proxmox manage the logical volumes for your VM disks; ZFS got native encrytion out of the box but not using the GUI. LVM-Thin got no encryption, so you would need to create your LVM-Thin ontop of a LUKS encrypted partition which is again not possible using the GUI. Like with most advanced things and proxmox.you can do basically everything, but you need to set it up yourself without a GUI.

I just started using ProxMox and am still confused by some of the conventions. I come from using docker compose from a simple debian host. A few days ago i set up proxmox on my systems nvme drive. Today i have added two hdd's to my system for bulk storage. I am currently trying to figure out, how to integrate these in the way i want. Again very helpful. With your suggestion, I wiped the disks and it seems I am able to add those as LVM, LVM-Thin or Directory. Is it possible to create a mirror raid array (RAID1) within the proxmox environment? I can make some compromises on the performance side.
In this tutorial i will show you proxmox lvm thin - lvm thin provisioning and help you how to create LVM Thin in Promox step by step. STEP 1:mkfs.ext4 /dev/s. Well, you did (re)create the thin pool in the pve volume group and not on /dev/sda.You should be able to: Create a thinpool on /dev/sda.Either via UI in [Node] > Disks > LVM Thin > Create: Thinpool.Or via CLI create a volume group that owns /dev/sda with pvcreate and vgcreate and then create a thinpool as described here, replacing the volume group name .
@Mike Tkatchouk I think the important part to highlight is that you are using _thick_ LVM, so as the VG gets sliced a thick LV gets created for each virtual disk. This LV is used by one node only (where the VM is active) and that is enforced by PVE. This is a fine and fully supported method by PVE but has few serious drawbacks - no Snapshots or Linked .
Finally, I reinstalled proxmox on 5 nodes, configured networks, created iscsi connections on each of them and configured multipath but did not create LVM's on top of it. Once these 5 nodes were clustered up, only then I created the LVM's and that did the trick if you need more space to store backups/.. on your LVM storage, I would allocate a regular LV on the 'data' pool, mount that somewhere and define a 'dir' type storage for that mountpoint. removing the 'data' thinpool means you lose the LVM thin features like snapshots, overprovisioning for both VMs and CTs.You can use the normal LVM command-line tools to manage and create LVM thin pools (see man lvmthin for details). Assuming you already have a LVM volume group called pve , the following commands create a new LVM thin pool (size 100G) called data :

Proxmox uses LVM by default for systems with only one disk. What the GUI you pictured in the first post shows is that the volume group called pve takes up almost the entire partition it is on. This is normal. The VG is then divided up into logical volumes. The same GUI shows that there are (or were) 17 volumes in the VG.
